Conversation on Originality

by Beauchamp Art

During a conversation on originality:

Henry:

Its irks me that I care so much about being original, unless your doing something new I feel sometimes there is no point, which is a stupid idea.

Me:

Well, it’s just one way of approaching things.
I take a more existentialist approach to things; and this is no exception. It doesn’t matter in the grand scheme, and without a free exchange of ideas, there would be more progress very little is totally original, most ideas are expansions or slightly altered existing ones.
One needs a shared language to be understood, with a few common words, no sense could be made of anything.
There is nothing wrong in striving for originality, so long as one realises that one must pass through unoriginal ideas to get there.

Henry:

It still feels a tad dirty taking ideas, but art is just taking ideas and slightly changing them or saying one bit is wrong

Me:

There is nothing wrong in striving for originality, so long as one realises that one must pass through unoriginal ideas to get there.
