Weekly Summary – 7.10.13 – 14.10.13
by Beauchamp Art
The majority of this week was spent organising the chaotic amalgam of work I have made thus far into a digestible format, and sorting out the current project’s written necessities; finalising my Statement of Intent (saying my intent, focusing my aims rather than trying to deconstruct my themes/techniques), and sorting out my presentation for Monday (10 slides, featuring examples of my work/research, with a list of key points & quotes I wish to use in).
After the week of words, the weekend was set aside for overdue photography; mostly re-taking ‘phone pictures and so forth; however the borrow camera out lacked a batteries, so I improvised serendipitously, combining Nick’s camera with extra lenses held in place.
Photograph of a computer screen displaying images of individuals walking, taken from atop the Norwich Roman Catholic Cathedral, looking down on the city and its inhabitants from its highest point. Watching, whether like a heavenly, lidless, unblinking eye, or the endless gaze of an Orwellian antagonistic; the surveillance of a CCTV operator, or a sight-seer surveying his landscape aloft a monument of man’s construction, or the self-constructed self-monitoring of public exposure, physically and digitally, where one may become tamed, like beasts before the swivelling uncertainty of Panopticon.
The pixelisation of the enlarged, re-photgraphed images dehumanises the figures into flat, abstract blocks, fragmented by image cells, and hardly recognisable as organic forms, any sense of life seeming like pareidolia, an assigned humanity rather than a true sense of anthropological existence. Nevertheless, in spite of their obscurity, the half out-of-focus delineated shapes are still somehow understandable as being people, given their context amongst the other images, and the sense of movement and the sustained approximation to life; despite their form, they can be read as distant figures
Unsleeping [WIP] GIF
Stop frame photo series of an individual watching a live webcam feed of New York City Time Square, whilst listening to the NY police radio transmissions. [To be re-photographed, and possibly re-staged as an instillation of found resources]
Experiments with the ‘Content Aware Fill’ on PSCS6, using a picture of my peer at a club, after a question/discussion about the potential faux pas of using a picture involving two individuals as one’s profile picture, given the unwanted implications about the relationship between the two persons featured.
Edited for comic affect, though shall be repeated more formally at a later date.
